Successful candidates will be employees of NWS, a premier government contractor charged with employing highly-motivated and well-qualified personnel who can advance the missions of the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in Livermore, CA. Though employed by NWS, the employee will take day-to-day direction from technical personnel employed directly by the research laboratories. Pay, benefits, Human Resource, and Employment Management functions are provided by NWS.

The Machine Tool Services Group in the Materials Engineering Division (MED) within the Engineering Directorate has multiple openings for Machine Tool Repairers in the Mechanical Discipline. Under general supervision, the successful candidate will be responsible for installing, testing, repairing, maintaining, or modifying basic mechanical and hydraulic systems on machine tools and related machine shop equipment in support of LLNL programs. The successful candidates will be responsible for troubleshooting and repair, preventative and reactive maintenance of mechanical machine shop equipment used for manufacturing. These positions require close interactions with technical and supervisory personnel throughout the Laboratory. The selected candidates may receive work assignments located at various locations, including Livermore and at Site 300. These positions will report to the Machine Tool Services Group Supervisor or Lead.

This position may require the employee to have the flexibility to work overtime, shift and/or weekends to accomplish goals. The successful candidate will be required to pass various on-site training modules to pursue work assignments.

Essential Duties

- Design, fabricate, install, maintain, or modify mechanical and hydraulic systems to improve the operation, reliability, and/or safety of LLNL's machine tools.

- Diagnose mechanical problems of manufacturing equipment and determine how to correct them, checking blueprints, repair manuals, and parts catalogs as necessary.

- Inspect, operate, and test machinery and equipment using a variety of machine tools to diagnose machine malfunctions, or to reproduce parts and determine need for adjustment or repair.

- Install and/or relocate machine tools and related equipment.

- Use hand and powered tools that are typically used to maintain machine tool mechanical and hydraulic systems, including diagnostic equipment (such as levels, straight edges, records, and ball bars).

- Solve fundamental problems.

- Verify conformance of repairs to specifications, using measuring and inspection tools as necessary.

- Maintain accurate legible records of maintenance work as required.

- Maintain machine tools in proper operational condition.

- Maintain cleanliness of the work area and ensures proper handling of tools, equipment, and stock to prevent loss.

- Coordinate and/or perform housekeeping and safety monitoring and ensure adequate follow-up, as required.

- Safely assist with other maintenance craft-work when needed.

- Perform all assignments in accordance with ES&H, security, and business practice requirements and policies.

- Perform other duties as assigned.

Marginal Duties

- May be required to work in areas with toxic, or high explosives materials.

- May have lead responsibilities for small groups of technical employees.

Essential Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities

- Intermediate Journey level education and experience (i.e., completion of an apprenticeship program or equivalent level of education/experience) or five years related experience and/or training.

- Demonstrated ability to diagnose and solve mechanical problems of manufacturing equipment from experience.

- Experience using hand and powered tools that are typically used to maintain machine tool mechanical and hydraulic systems, including basic diagnostic equipment with basic applications (e.g., electronic levels, auto-collimators, straight edges, recorders, and ball bars).

- Experience testing, installing, repairing, and maintaining basic machine tool mechanical and hydraulic systems.

- Ability to work from plans, blueprints, and oral or written instructions, and to exercise judgement in determining techniques and methods.

- Knowledge of applicable OSHA & ES&H regulations.

- Demonstrated effective verbal and written communication and skills.

- Must possess and maintain a valid California driver's license with the ability to operate common motor vehicles including a 6000 lb. fork truck.

- Ability to effectively utilize personal computers, as applicable.

- Ability to become medically qualified to wear respiratory and protection equipment.

- Ability to obtain and maintain DOE Q clearance.

Desired Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities

- AA degree in Mechanical Technology.

- Experience in a manufacturing maintenance work environment.

- Familiarity with LLNL manufacturing facilities and ES&H policies

- Experience with machine controllers (Fanuc, Siemens) and troubleshooting of associated servo systems.

- Familiarity with the electrical construction trade.

Special Requirements

Pre-Placement Medical Exam: A job related pre-placement medical examination may be required.

Anticipated Clearance Level: Q (position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing. Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship.
