This position is supporting the National Ignition Facility (NIF) which is the world’s largest and most energetic laser facility ever built. NIF is also the most precise and reproducible laser as well as the largest optical instrument. The giant laser has nearly 40,000 optics, which precisely guide, reflect, amplify, and focus 192 laser beams onto a fusion target about the size of a pencil eraser.
The NIF&PS Directorate has an opening for a Power Conditioning Systems Operations and Maintenance Technician. The NIF laser is the world’s most powerful laser system, capable of producing over 1.8 MJ of optical energy. The successful candidate will operate the Power Conditioning System (PCS) and the Plasma-Electrode Pockels Cell (PEPC) systems through the high-level computer control system following detailed procedures. The PCS employs one hundred ninety-two high voltage (24 KV), high-energy (1.7 MJ per module) capacitor bank modules used to power the large flash lamps in the NIF solid-state laser amplifiers. The PEPC system employs high voltage electronics and sophisticated controls hardware and software to implement an optical switch topology for the 192 beams of the NIF main laser. These systems include: high voltage power supplies, pulsed power hardware and circuits, analog, and digital controls hardware and software, embedded computers and diagnostics. The successful candidate will be expected to operate both systems remotely using Graphical User Interfaces (GUIs) and perform site maintenance including electrical distribution, high voltage gear, digital circuits analog circuits, vacuum controls, compressed air controls and/or major system configurations across multiple engineering disciplines. Primary interactions will be with the lead operators, shot directors, system managers and electrical engineering support personnel.
Due to the vast and varying types of experiments, NIF is a 24/7 operational facility. This position may require the Engineering Technician V / Power Conditioning Systems Operations and Maintenance Tech to have the flexibility to work overtime, shift and or weekends to accomplish goals. This position may also require working alternate schedules such as 4/10’s or 12 hour shifts. The successful candidate will be required to pass various on-site training modules to pursue work assignments.
-Operate the PCS and PEPC systems through the high-level computer control system following detailed procedures
-Troubleshoot, repair and maintain the Power Conditioning Unit (PCU) using oscilloscopes, computer- based diagnostics, multi-meters and other diagnostic tools
-Maintain, troubleshoot and repair the PEPC Controls and Diagnostics (C&D)
-Acceptance testing of the plasma pulse generator (PPG) and the PECP Turbo Pump to insure ready for service at NIF
-Provide accurate documentation of problems to effect immediate repairs or pass down for next shift.
-Responsible for spare components inventory management to insure appropriate level of components are on hand for the PPG and PEPC C&D, including tracking and ordering of critical or long lead spares
- Responsible for completion of inventory report (LoCoS) to maintain inventory status of the PCUs, PECP Turbo Pumps and the PEPC C&D
-Review the daily PECP Turbo Pump trends to preemptively identify failing pump to prevent shot downtime
-Maintain accurate and complete documentation regarding corrective actions for all repairs and routine maintenance
-Automation of the review of the daily PECP Turbo Pump trends
-Follow detailed procedures to render the high voltage systems “safe” for maintenance activities
-Operate hi-potters and other high voltage instruments
-Maintain a close interface with the various programmatic and project elements to ensure teamwork and end-user communication.
-Provide input to new and existing test and maintenance procedures
-Become qualified as a daily work team leader.
-Provide “sweeps” to ensure no personnel occupy experimental areas prior to LASER operations.
-Assure all assignments are performed in accordance with ES&H requirements and policies.
Essential Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities
-AA/AS degree in Electronics Technology or 4+ years of equivalent combination of education and experience related to the essential skills, knowledge, and abilities below.
-Knowledge and ability to read electrical schematics and electrical assembly drawings is mandatory
-Knowledge of electrical and mechanical engineering principles, analog and digital circuits, and vacuum and mechanical technologies
-Ability to make practical and logical decisions for maintaining, assembling, and upgrading existing equipment
-Understanding of high voltage / high power systems and work procedures with relevant experience
-Knowledge and experience with computer based control systems
-Demonstrated cabling skills and experience including pin terminations and connectors, and length characterization for timing and documentation
-Experience troubleshooting and repairing analog and digital control systems hardware
-Good mechanical aptitude including use of hand tools
-High-level skills, knowledge and ability in electronics technology. Willingness to learn new technology and techniques
-Experience making independent, fundamental decisions regarding a variety of technical problems
-Demonstrated interpersonal skills; well organized, reliable and proactive
-Demonstrated oral and written communication skills
-Experience working in a team environment, effectively interfacing with scientists, engineers and other technicians.
-Ability to work effectively and safely under minimal supervision and under time pressure
-Ability to work in a dynamic multi-disciplinary project environment with simultaneous commitments to performance and schedule.
Desired Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities
-Familiarity with fiber optic cables
-Experience with creating and maintaining documentation (including simple schematics)
-Familiarity with Windows operating systems, PCs, networked drives and servers, web based applications and embedded computers
-Experience with Microsoft Office
-Experience with LabVIEW
-Experience operating / maintaining vacuum systems
-Experience operating / maintaining low pressure (100psi) systems
-Experience with lock-out tag-out (LOTO)
-Experience in the design and implementation of electronic/computer controls as well as actuators, motors, pneumatics and sensors
