Job Description

North Wind Services, is actively seeking individuals who can contribute to national security within the science, technology, and engineering fields as part of our supplemental labor team at vital federal research and development installations supporting the Department of Energy. Successful candidates will be employees of NWS, a premier government contractor charged with employing highly-motivated and well-qualified personnel who can advance the missions of the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in Livermore, CA. Though employed by NWS, the employee will take day-to-day direction from technical personnel employed directly by the research laboratories. Pay, benefits, Human Resource, and Employment Management functions are provided by NWS.

The Defense Technologies Engineering Division (DTED) of the Engineering Directorate has multiple openings for highly qualified Electro-Mechanical Designer in support of the Integrated Engineering and Design Group. This group supports the LLNL Weapon Complex and Integration (WCI) program including Weapon Technology Engineering (WTE), and other programs. Projects typically involve very sophisticated designs and require fast paced, highly skilled, and trained employees. Working under general direction, the successful candidates will work independently in applying innovative technical expertise to create original design solutions addressing diverse engineering projects and complex design problems. The successful candidates will support design solutions by preparing mechanical designs, mechanical drawing packages, schedules, and status reports. May use independent discretion to set priorities. Successful candidate will collaborate with scientists, engineers, and high-level technical personnel to independently formulate advanced technical solutions. Frequent decision-making is to be based on interpreting and analyzing complex data. Successful candidates will make independent technical decisions that may have significant impact to broad segments or sections of a project with moderate to high consequence of error. This position will require initiative and the exercise of independent judgment while following laboratory policies and procedures, industry standards and specifications. This position will report administratively to the Defense Technologies Engineering Division (DTED) Group Supervisor within the Engineering Directorate.

This position may require the employee to have the flexibility to work overtime, shift and/or weekends to accomplish goals. The successful candidate will be required to pass various on-site training modules to pursue work assignments.

Essential Duties

- Provide Electro-Mechanical Design and drafting support at a system level to engineering, scientific, and technical staff utilizing knowledge of CAD tools where design parameters and specifications have been established

- Experience with AutoCAD and/or Mentor Graphics PADS/DxDesigner software

- Generate or drive Electro-Mechanical design solutions that address requirements and constraints, and translate these solutions into detailed interconnection, schematic, wiring, panel layouts, silkscreens, chassis, and associated mechanical detail and assembly drawings

- Provide supporting documentation for Electro-Mechanical design solutions that may include analysis, schedules, costing, processes, and procedures

- Provide advanced Electro-Mechanical technical contributions and solutions in a team environment

- Provide graphics and related technical material in support of design reviews, procedures, and other documentation

- Review completed drawings and other documentation for adherence to LLNL drafting standards and specifications

- Maintain drawings and other technical documents in the DTED configuration management system

- Perform all assignments in accordance with ES&H, security, and business practice requirements and policies.

- Perform other duties as assigned.

Essential Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities

- Associates Degree (AA/AS) or equivalent in Electro-Mechanical Design/Drafting Technology or Mechanical Design/Drafting or related field

- Working knowledge of developing design concepts with a broad background in its various sub-disciplines – electronics, mechanical, and/or electro-mechanical

- Experience within the scope of concept, design, fabrication and materials, prototyping projects from start to finish.

- Ability to analyze and interpret complex design requirements, and to exercise creativity and judgment in solving Electro-Mechanical design problems

- Ability to interpret and follow notes sketches, drawings, specifications, and procedures

- Experience working as a member of a project team with engineers, scientists, designers, technicians, and coordinators

- Ability to present concepts and ideas in a clear and coherent manner both verbal and written to peers and managers in presentation form and report form, to small and large groups as needed

- Ability to independently solve technical design problems and achieve results on schedule

- Fundamental skills in Microsoft Office software including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

- Must be able to meet pre-employment requirements consisting of a physical, drug screen and background investigation under clearance requirements from the Department of Energy

Desired Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities

- B.S. Degree in Electro-Mechanical/Electronics or Mechanical Engineering or related field

- Experience using PTC Windchill Product Lifecycle Management software

- Experience using Altium Designer software

- Experience using Creo Parametric software

- Experience using Creo Schematics software

- Experience using GerbTool software

- Knowledge of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (ASME Y14.5)

Special Requirements

Pre-Placement Medical Exam: A job related pre-placement medical examination may be required.

Pre-employment drug test: External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post offer, pre-employment drug test.

Anticipated Clearance Level: Q (position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing. Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold multiple citizenships (U.S. and another country), you may be required to renounce your non-U.S. citizenship before a DOE L or Q clearance will be processed/granted.
