North Wind Services, is actively seeking individuals who can contribute to national security within the science, technology, and engineering fields as part of our supplemental labor team at vital federal research and development installations supporting the Department of Energy. Successful candidates will be employees of NWS, a premier government contractor charged with employing highly-motivated and well-qualified personnel who can advance the missions of the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in Livermore, CA. Though employed by NWS, the employee will take day-to-day direction from technical personnel employed directly by the research laboratories. The National Ignition Facility (NIF) and Photon Science Directorate has an opening for a highly qualified Electro-Mechanical Design engineer. Applicants must possess an enthusiasm for Electronics Engineering; one that is looking for a challenge to “think out of the box” and have the skills to forecast needed changes to continue high achievement and excellence. And a willingness to pursue professional growth in the field of Electro-Mechanical design. NIF is a state-of-the art, one-of-a-kind facility that requires fast-paced, highly skilled, and trained employees. NIF is seeking to enhance its core staff with people who can lead future design and engineering efforts as NIF continues its scientific journey through operations in its experimental facility. These mechanical, Electro-Mechanical, laser, optical systems require advanced technical skills to work on very sophisticated designs. Successful candidates must have demonstrated exceptionally high ability in past engineering projects and positions, being able to demonstrate knowledge and experience from conception to completion of large scale or complex projects. This requires a versatile, broad-based Electro-Mechanical Design Engineer capable of developing, individually or with other Electronics Engineers and Engineers of various disciplines to provide: 1) novel and innovative designs, 2) exacting specifications, 3) processes and procedures for the installation and commissioning of the hardware, 4) interactions with vendors and finally 5) integration of the hardware in a large, complex, and tightly secured facility.  The successful candidate will work within the NIF and Photon Science Engineering Design group.  This unique group requires the flexibility and openness to move within the design group to where their skills will be needed most.  Because of the vast and varying types of experiments, this position will require the Electronics Design Engineer to have the ability to be flexible, working within various NIF departments that require design assistance.  NIF will provide the successful candidate an opportunity to be part of an elite team in advancing forward into the future of lasers and advanced science and physics.

This position may require the employee to have the flexibility to work overtime, shift and/or weekends to accomplish goals. The successful candidate will be required to pass various on-site training modules to pursue work assignments.

Essential Duties

- Provide Electrical Design and drafting support at a system level to engineering, scientific, and technical staff utilizing knowledge of CAD tools where design parameters and specifications have been established.

- Experience with AutoCAD.

- Generate or drive Electrical design solutions that address requirements and constraints, and translate these solutions into detailed interconnection, schematic, wiring, panel layouts, silkscreens, and associated mechanical detail and assembly drawings.

- Provide supporting documentation for Electrical design solutions that may include analysis, schedules, costing, processes, and procedures.

- Perform calculations to support technical work using standard engineering formulas.

- Provide advanced Electrical technical advice and solutions in a team environment.

- Provide supporting documentation for Electrical design solutions that may include analysis, schedules, costing, processes, and procedures.

- Provide graphics and related technical material in support of design reviews, procedures, and other documentation.

- Review completed drawings and other documentation for adherence to LLNL drafting standards and specifications.

- Maintain drawings and other technical records applying appropriate Configuration Management with a Product Lifecycle Management.

- Perform all assignments in accordance with ES&H, security, and business practice requirements and policies.

- Perform other duties as assigned.

Essential Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities

- Associates Degree (AA/AS) or equivalent with applicable experience in Electrical Design/Drafting Technology or Electro-Mechanical Design/Drafting or related field.

- Working knowledge of developing design concepts with a broad background in its various sub-disciplines – mechanical, optical, and electro-mechanical.

- Experience within the scope of conception, design, fabrication and materials, prototyping projects from start to finish.

- Must have the ability and attitude to develop a project from start to finish. (Should be able to provide examples from past jobs).

- Ability to analyze and interpret complex design requirements, and to exercise creativity and judgment in solving electrical design problems.

- Ability to interpret and follow notes sketches, drawings, specifications, and procedures.

- Experience working as a member of a project team with engineers, scientists, designers, technicians, and coordinators.

- Ability to present concepts and ideas in a clear and coherent manner both verbal and written to peers and managers in presentation form and report form, to small and large groups as needed.

- Ability to independently solve technical design problems and achieve results on schedule.

- Demonstrated analytical skills in systems analysis and experience on experimental systems.

- Skills in Microsoft software such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint etc.

- Must be able to meet pre-employment requirements consisting of a physical, drug screen and background investigation under clearance requirements from the Department of Energy.

Desired Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities

- B.S. Degree in Electrical/Electronics or Electro-Mechanical Engineering or related field.

- Experience using PTC Windchill.

- Experience using Creo Parametric software.

- Experience using Creo Schematics software.

- Experience with Mentor Graphics PADS/DxDesigner software.

- Provide Printed Circuit Board Design and drafting support to engineering, scientific, and technical staff.

- Experience using GerbTool software.

- Knowledge of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (ASME Y14.5).

- Experience in reviewing and verifying the accuracy of work performed by peers and other engineering disciplines as needed.


Special Requirements

Pre-Placement Medical Exam: A job related pre-placement medical examination may be required.

Anticipated Clearance Level: Q (position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing. Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship.
