Job Description

The Plus Group is seeking a Controls Engineer to join our client’s engineering and maintenance team. This role will focus on analyzing plant processes to drive controls improvements, support production assets, and ensure safety and quality in a food manufacturing environment.

The Controls Engineer will design, program, test, and troubleshoot automation systems for aseptic filling and process lines, material handling, and packaging operations. Acting as a technical resource, this role will partner with engineering, operations, and maintenance teams to deliver innovative solutions and maintain system reliability.


Key Responsibilities

  • Provide machine and automation support for PLCs, HMIs, safety controllers, robotics, motion control, instrumentation, industrial networks, and MES/data collection systems.

  • Design, upgrade, and troubleshoot aseptic filling and processing lines, ensuring compliance with safety and food manufacturing standards.

  • Implement company change management processes to drive performance and continuous improvement.

  • Manage equipment upgrades, overhauls, and conversions; support commissioning and validation of new systems.

  • Provide training to operators and maintenance staff on new systems and equipment.

  • Participate in after-hours engineering support on a rotating basis.


Minimum Qualifications

  • Associate’s degree in Electrical Engineering (or equivalent technical experience).

  • Must have food manufacturing experience.

  • 2–5 years of technical or operational experience in automation, controls, or engineering.

  • Hands-on experience with Rockwell Automation PLCs and HMIs.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with a cause-effect mindset.

  • Experience commissioning, troubleshooting, and supporting processing and packaging equipment.

  • Ability to work effectively with cross-functional teams and external vendors/OEMs.

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills; self-motivated with evidence of continuous learning.

  • Valid driver’s license and ability to travel as needed.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering.

  • In-depth knowledge of Tetra Pak and/or Stork aseptic filling equipment.

  • At least 2 years of direct experience with aseptic processing and packaging systems.

  • Experience with Beckhoff PLCs, robotics (Fanuc), motion control, VFDs, safety hardware, and vision systems (Cognex, Keyence).

  • Familiarity with FDA regulations and food processing compliance standards.

  • Proficiency with AutoCAD and NFPA electrical codes.

Working Conditions

  • Frequent exposure to varying temperature environments (60–130°F), wet conditions, loud noise, vibration, and moving machinery.

  • Potential exposure to allergens (milk, soy), airborne particles, and food processing equipment fumes.

  • May require occasional lifting of up to 25 lbs.
