Job Description

Knowable Magazine, an award-winning online publication dedicated to exploring science research through a journalistic lens, is seeking a part time temporary Associate Copyeditors who resides in CA, OR, OH, NV, NC, VA, WA, WI, CO, MA, PA, NY, HI, or GA.

Working in close collaboration with our Knowable Magazine editors, the Associate Copyeditor will review stories, captions, original graphics, newsletter and other content for accuracy, clarity, grammar, syntax, spelling, punctuation, formatting, SEO and adherence to Chicago and Knowable style. Other duties will include:

  • Help write or edit engaging, conversational headlines and subheads that follow Knowable style and SEO best practices
  • Proofread email newsletters and other communications
  • Help to create and maintain the Knowable Editorial Style Guide
Knowable is an editorially independent online magazine dedicated to revealing what’s known and what’s still not known across the array of fields explored in the Annual Reviews scientific journals.

Annual Reviews (AR) is a nonprofit publisher dedicated to synthesizing and integrating knowledge for the progress of science and the benefit of society. Job Requirements
Qualified candidates will have:

• A graduate degree in science or science communication + at least 3 years of science journalism experience or a BA/BS in science or journalism + 5 years journalism experience covering science or biomedicine and writing on deadline.
• 5 to 10+ years of copyediting experience for a journalistic publication or site
• Exceptional attention to detail, grammar and logical story construction
• A solid grasp of Chicago style and familiarity with AP and scientific style
• Ability to read, analyze and interpret common scientific and technical information.
• Advanced MS Word skills
• Excellent verbal, written & interpersonal communication skills
• A strong work ethic, professional demeanor and tact
• Ability to work on tight deadlines
• Strong organizational skills
• Ability to analyze situations effectively, prioritize tasks, work independently, and self-manage
• Interest in science and technology
• Specific vision abilities include close vision, ability to adjust focus and color vision in order to perform fact checking to ensure that the colors on graphs, maps and photos match legends or captions.
